On Saturday evening, area jockey Mario Pino, riding in his first Kentucky Derby atop Hard Spun, finished second after leading most of the race. There will be a rematch between Street Sense and Hard Spun at Pimlico for the Preakness Stakes on May 19. The full schedule of events for the week of the Preakness was announced this past week.

The Orioles took 2 out of 3 games from the Indians this weekend.Their next game is Monday against the Indians at Oriole Park at 12:35.In today’s game, Brian Burres was rocked in his first major league start for the Os as the Indians won 9-6. Baltimore won 8-2 Saturday and 3-2 Friday night in extra innings. The Orioles also announced that they’ve pulled alcohol from the clubhouse following the death of Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock last week.

The Baltimore Blackbirds (of the American Indoor Football Association) lost to the Carolina Speed 52-32 in Charlotte today. The Blackbirds travel to Alabama next Saturday to take on the Montgomery Bears.

Johns Hopkins defeated Loyola 12-9 in men’s lacrosse Saturday in a televised game at Homewood field. The Blue Jays won the Centennial Conference crown in baseball today after defeating Ursinus 21-4 in Game 1 and 16-4 in Game 2 of the double-elimination finals. JHU had a close call in the semis Saturday with a 8-7 win in 10 innings over the Gettysburg Bullets. The Blue Jays defeated Franklin and Marshall earlier in the day Saturday. Ursinus knocked JHU into the loser’s bracket of the tourney by defeating them in first round action Friday. The women’s tennis team had their season come to an end with a loss to Mary Washington in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament.

The Maryland men’s lax team defeated Yale on Senior Day by a final of 12-4. The Terps will next play in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The UMCP softball team took two of three from the Boston College Eagles to end their regular season. They take the field later this week in the ACC Tournament in Tallahassee, Florida. The Terrapin baseball team lost the first two game of a series against Florida State this weekend. Today, the Terps rallied to defeat the Seminoles 3-2 in the finale to salvage a game against FSU.

The Morgan State Bears won 3 of 4 games on the softball diamond this week. They swept UMES Saturday and then split a doubleheader at Howard today.

It was a dissapointing sports weekend for the Towson Tigers. In men’s lacrosse, the Tigers lost to Delaware in the CAA finals. The Blue Hens receive the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament while the Tigers should get in on an at-large bid. In baseball, the Virginia Commonwealth Rams swept Towson. VCU won the 3rd game despite Towson racking up 17 hits. The Tigers fell to 17-27 (8-15 in CAA play.) The Tigers’ softball team was swept in a doubleheader Saturday night and then lost this afternoon at James Madison. In the spring football game Saturday, the offense defeated the defense 38-18.

In the America East final, the UMBC men’s lacrosse team lost 15-14 to Albany. The men’s track team finished 3rd and the women 7th at the America East championship on at UMBC. The Retrievers’ softball team lost two of three to Hartford this weekend, including a 7-2 loss today on Senior Day for the Retrievers. The baseball team split a doubleheader at Lafayette Saturday and lost to the Leopards 9-1 Sunday afternoon.

The Navy baseball team defeated MD-Eastern Shore today 10-4 to give the Midshipmen a record 35th win for the season. The win also gave Navy a sweep of UMES this weekend. Their next game is against Army in next week’s Patriot League Tournament at Lafayette. The women’s lax team defeated rival Army 19-2. The women’s crew races with Washington College were cancelled due to unsafe conditions on the Severn River.

As previously mentioned, the Loyola Greyhounds lost to Hopkins in men’s lacrosse. The women’s track team finished 4th at the MAAC championships in New Jersey. The women’s lacrosse team lost in their season finale against Cornell.
