More problems for Orioles announce team on MASN
First, Gary Thorne said that Kurt Schilling’s bloody sock in the 2004 ALCS was fake. Now, MASN announcer Rick Dempsey joked about domestic violence while talking to Jay Gibbons’ wife about her charity work on-air during a game this past weekend.
Rick Maese of The Sun has the video and the transcript.
Update: For those of you arriving here via Deadspin, the original above link to the Rick Maese column was no longer working. It has been corrected now and I will also excerpt the transcript below in case it goes away again. Roch Kubatko at the Sun has also blogged on the subject and points out that Dempsey has since apologized. Kubatko also reminds us that Dempsey is new in the announce booth – he previously was back in the studio. Maese also blogged on the story (with a transcript) and linked to video posted elsewhere.
From The Sun:
• Dempsey: “Laura, will this kind of help Jay in the domestic violence area? If he doesn’t start getting a few more hits, you might grab him around the neck and rough him up a little bit. [Is] this money going to go to help him a little bit with maybe some of the hospital bills or something like that?”
• Giuliani: “I don’t know, Rick. I don’t think I’m encouraging that. I’m definitely not -”
• Dempsey: “Not going there?”
• Giuliani: “Nope, not going there.”
• Dempsey: “All right, I’ll domestically violate him if he doesn’t start getting some more hits.”
