Former Congressman dead at 85
Posted by Jeff Quinton on May 29, 2007Former Congressman Parren Mitchell has died of pneumonia at the age of 85. Mitchell was the first Black congressman elected from Maryland. He was a World War II veteran and received a Purple Heart. Mitchell graduated with an A.B. from Morgan State and an M.A. from the University of Maryland. He served in congress from 1971-1987.
