Orioles fire Perlozzo
Posted by Jeff Quinton on June 18, 2007
The Baltimore Sun (via WBAL) reports that Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo is being fired by team management. The Orioles, who just lost eight straight, are set to start a road trip in San Diego tomorrow. WBAL radio reported earlier today that team captain Kevin Millar had called a players-only team meeting tomorrow night in San Diego.
A 1 p.m. press conference at Camden Yards is expected to make the announcement official. Bullpen coach Dave Trembley is reported to now be the interim manager.
Updates:
OTB Sports has more from the Sun report, including the fact that Andy MacPhail has joined the front office staff and Joe Girardi is a candidate to replace Perlozzo.
Rick Maese points out that the Orioles’ problems are larger ones than can be fixed by firing the manager every couple of years.
Bill Ordine says to write off the rest of the season and expect a roster shake-up in the off-season. Ordine also thinks the MacPhail move means the two-headed GM monster of Duquette and Flanagan could end. Ordine’s take on Girardi possibly coming in is that Leo Mazzone is probably gone.
Drew Forester of WNST has a timeline of how the story unfoled this morning. He will be posting again after returning from the 1 p.m. news conference.
