A.M. Baltimore
Posted by Jeff Quinton on July 3, 2007Good morning and welcome to a roundup of this morning’s Baltimore news. Today’s weather is supposed to be partly cloudy with a high of 81 degrees and south winds in the 5-10 mph range.
All of the city election fields are now set. The candidates for mayor include Phillip A. Brown, Jr., Andrey Bundley, Jill P. Carter, Frank M. Conaway, Sheila Dixon, Elbert Henderson, A. Robert Kaufman, Keiffer J. Mitchell, Jr., and Mike Schaefer. Comptroller Joan Pratt is running unopposed for re-election. Rikki Spector is the only City Council member running without opposition. The primaries are September 11.
Baltimore County’s homicide numbers increased to 21 (comparedto 18 this time last year) for the year last night with the shooting of a man around 9 p.m. in the 8000 block of Philadelphia Road.
John R. Griffin, state Natural Resources secretary, did not disclose that he did consulting work for the company selling 270 acres of land to the state and Queen Anne’s County. DNR recommended the purchase but Griffin says he was told by the Attorney General’s office that he didn’t have a conflict.
Baltimore County approved a raise for Administrative Officer Fred Homan despite a lawsuit from a former employee claiming she was fired for walking in on Homan and a female assistant county attorney in the attorney’s office after hours in what has been described as an “awkward” situation.
The Maryland Historical Society is closing two of its museums to save money. The two museums that will close September 1 are the Civil War Museum in the President Street Station and the Fells Point Maritime Museum. The MDHS is looking to find someone else to take over both museums.
The Orioles came back in the ninth inning to defeat the White Sox 7-6. Rob Bell got the win for Baltimore while Chris Ray earned the save.

Dear Inside Charm City:
We’ve been working with the Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association with the launch of their brand new site, VisitMyBaltimore.com. In doing so, we’ve hand-selected some prominent Baltimore bloggers and would like to invite you to get in on it before it’s officially launched on July 10th!
The new site, VisitMyBaltimore.com, will feature videos of the city portrayed through the eyes of those who know it best—those folks who live, work and play here—folks just like you!
Want to get involved and win the $2007 prize for the best “My Baltimore” video?
Grab your video camera and create your own video about what you know and love about Baltimore. Show us your favorite neighborhood, bar or restaurant, where you love to shop downtown or the first place you take your friends and family who visit from out of town. The contest is running now through September 4th and we’re giving you, already a voice of the city, an exclusive first chance to show people what they’re missing.
To view a sample video please visit www.VisitMyBaltimore.com
To submit a video prior to July 10th: www.VisitMyBaltimore.com/whatsnew/video/sendvideo_bacva.php
To submit a video after July 10th:
http://www.visitmybaltimore.com/signup/index.html (this page will not be live until July 10th)!
If you would like to offer your blog readers, friends or family the same chance to get in on the video submissions, great!
Thank you for your time and consideration. We would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have,
