Illegal Guatemalan charged in hit and run deaths of road workers

Posted by Jeff Quinton on August 14, 2007

An illegal immigrant from Guatemala turned himself into Prince Georges County Police today, who then promptly turned him over to Montgomery County Police. Manuel De Jesus Gonzalez-Geronimo, of Hyattsville, has been charged with “failure to remain at the scene of a collision involving death and bodily injury and with driving without a license.”

The Sun report linked above says that Gonzalez-Geronimo reported he was “undocumented” during a court hearing. He is charged with hitting a parked construction truck that then hit 5 members of a road crew from PDI Sheetz (a state contractor) and killing 2 of the workers while injuring the other 3. The workers were on a guardrail taking a break.

Maryland is one of 8 states that does issue drivers’ licenses to illegals. In May, an illegal immigrant from Mexico was charged in the hit and run death of a University of Maryland student. In November, an illegal from Mexico was charged with “manslaughter and negligent homicide while under the influence” in the deaths of two people, including a Marine corporal.
