It’s time to make the doughnuts

Posted by Jeff Quinton on August 23, 2007

Baltimore Snacker explores the fact that Dunkin Donuts (as opposed to Krispy Kreme) is the donut leader in the area, despite the fondness for Southern foods in the area. Boiled peanuts and pimento cheese are mentioned (both things I grew up with in South Carolina and both things that people around here visibly recoil at the mention of.)

Krispy Kreme really never got its tentacles into this market from what I’ve seen. Farther south, they had locations all over the place before they ended up centralizing in one location in many smaller or medium sized cities. The only Krispy Kreme I’ve seen here lately is the one in Columbia. The one on Belair Road in Perry Hall folded over a year ago and is now a T-Mobile store.  I can tolerate Dunkin Donuts in most instances but the one farther up Belair Road across from Safeway was not so hot (mainly service) the last time I went there when my wife was sick and having a craving for Munchkins.

The only Krispy Kreme I knew of out in this area (Lutherville/Towson) was on York Road across from the fairgrounds. It didn’t last long and is now a bank. Frankly, I don’t think I’ve ever had an actual Krispy Kreme donut, just the store bought ones that somebody brought to a function. I grew up on Dunkin Donuts and Mister Donut (up 95 outside the Philly area) so Krispy Kreme was always this mythical thing I’d heard about. Sorta like Tim Hortons.
