Orioles fire Trebelhorn; Mazzone to stay?
Posted by Jeff Quinton on September 30, 2007
Baltimore Orioles manager Dave Trembley has fired bench coach Tom Trebelhorn. Trebelhorn had been with the team for 12 years and previously managed the Cubs and the Brewers. First base coach Sammy Mejias will also be replaced. Trebelhorn, who was promoted to bench coach by former manager Sam Perlozzo, had planned on coming back.
Pitching coach Leo Mazzone, a friend of Perlozzo’s who left his job as the long-time Braves’ pitching coach when Perlozzo was hired as manager, wants to remain coaching next year and wants to retire in Baltimore.
Mazzone’s comments:
“I want to go until I’m 62, and I hope the rest of the way it’s in a Baltimore uniform,” said Mazzone, who turns 59 on Oct. 16. “I mean this place, it’s my home state and this is one of the greatest sports towns in the United States.”
It appears doubtful Trebelhorn, who is 60, will be hired by another team.
Update: More coverage at Oriole Magic and Roch Around the Clock.
