Restaurant Review: Big Kahuna Cantina

A few weeks ago (probably over a month ago now), I had been at a Sunday afternoon Orioles game with my wife and we decided to walk around after the game. We went through the parts of the Legends of Sports Museum we hadn’t made it to yet (all of downstairs and the Unitas, Colts and Ravens exhibits upstairs) before we headed over toward the Inner Harbor.

We walked around so I could take some pictures and looked at what restaurants had opened or closed since we had been down there previously since it isn’t a regular haunt for either of us (I took my parents there over last Christmas when they were in town and I’m not sure when my wife was last there.)

We finally decided to go back to the Light Street Pavilion to Big Kahuna Cantina. They apparently had a soft opening sometime before we were there and within the past few weeks they’ve had a grand opening based on an email I received a couple of weeks ago.

The theme of the restaurant is a Mexican-Hawaiian fusion that they apparently term “Mexinesian.”

Surfboards and Tiki decor compete for space with posters and pictures of luchadores.

Their specialty among the appetizers on the menu is their guacamole that’s prepared at your table. We skipped the appetizers. I had their limeade to drink and it was great and tasted like liquid key lime pie. My wife had the Tazo Sweetened Passion Fruit Tea. She had the Soft Tacos “Fajita Style” while I had the Big Wave Crabcake (a sandwich.)

My wife enjoyed the tacos and the crabcake on the sandwich was excellent. The service was good and the prices weren’t too bad for that location. We’d probably go back there at some point if we were in the area but I’m not sure we’d make a special trip right now.

The restaurant is owned by Capital Restaurant Concepts. They also own J. Paul’s in the same building and Paolo’s in Towson as well as several other restaurants in Washington.
