Sylvester Croom to coach the Ravens?
Posted by Jeff Quinton on January 6, 2008There have been rumors flying all week since the firing of Baltimore Ravens head coach Brian Billick about who might replace him as coach. I’ll go over the chronology of these names and rumors as soon as I detail the latest name to be mentioned as a possibility.
Moving the Chains reports that Chris Mortensen of ESPN has said that Mississippi State Bulldogs coach Sylvester Croom is a potential candidate for the vacant head coaching job here in Baltimore. Ravens’ GM Ozzie Newsome played college football with Croom at Alabama. Mortensen also mentioned the name of Brian Schottenheimer as a possibility.
There’s also speculation Billick could wind up on the staff of the Phildaelphia Eagles.
Ravens’ defensive coordinator Rex Ryan has been the name most often mentioned this week. New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels won’t interview anywhere this off-season. Other names mentioned include: Kirk Ferentz, Jim Caldwell, Jim Fassel, Jason Garrett, Jeff Jagodzinksi, Marty Schottenheimer, Jim Schwartz, Mike Singletary, Tony Sparano and Mike Tice.
WBAL TV reported Saturday night after the playoff game on a delayed late newscast that Garrett and Sparano, both of the Dallas Cowboys, had interviewed for the Ravens job and that Sparano had also talked to the Miami Dolphins and reportedly had been offered that job. Today’s Baltimore Sun has a full profile of Garrett.
