Lee-Jackson birthday ceremony Saturday
Posted by Jeff Quinton on January 18, 2008
The Maryland Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Colonel Harry W. Gilmor Camp #1388 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will be sponsoring a Lee-Jackson Birthday Ceremony Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
The event will be across from the Baltimore Museum of Art at the Lee-Jackson monument near the intersection of Wyman Park Drive and Art Museum Drive.
The picture at left is one I took at last year’s ceremony. In the past, there have been reenactors, speakers and representatives from various organizations including the SCV, UDC and the Baltimore Civil War Roundtable. One of last year’s speakers was Les Kinsolving of WCBM.
The reenactors will parade in just before the 11 a.m. ceremony and then after the speeches and wreath-layings there will be refreshments in the Clipper Room at Johns Hopkins.
I’ve excerpted the Gilmor camp website about the event below:
As in the past, the annual memorial ceremony at the LEE/JACKSON Monument in Baltimore will be hosted by the Colonel Harry W. Gilmor Camp #1388, Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Maryland Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy. The purpose of this ceremony is to honor General Robert Edward Lee and General Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson on the anniversary of their births, January 19, 1807 and January 21, 1824 respectively. The ceremony will also remember and honor the thousands of soldiers who served the Confederacy during the War Between the States.
In previous years, many of you have attended this ceremony even in the coldest weather and because of your effort and dedication to the memory of the Confederate soldier, the ceremony has always been a great success. We would like to once again cordially invite you and your reenactment unit, patriotic organization, and/or your family and friends to participate in this important annual event. The LEE/JACKSON ceremony will be held on SATURDAY, January 19, 2008, at 11:00 A.M.
The LEE/JACKSON Monument is located at Art Museum Drive and Wyman Park Drive about two blocks west of Charles Street and across from the Baltimore Museum of Art. There will be plenty of free parking at Johns Hopkins University. We would appreciate it if all reenactment units would arrive between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a. m. Just as in previous years, we will assemble in the Johns Hopkins parking lot across from the monument and march to the ceremony.
THE LEE / JACKSON BIRTHDAY CEREMONY PROGRAM WILL INCLUDE:
* Music from the War Between the States
* March on of troops
* Invocation by UDC Chaplain
* Pledge of Allegiance to the US flag
* Salute to the Confederate flag
* Welcoming remarks
* Presentation of memorial wreaths and floral tributes by various patriotic organizations and military units.
*Singing of Dixie
* Benediction by UDC Chaplain
* Refreshments at Johns Hopkins

From records of my grandfather’s granite company, it appears that the Lee Jackson Memorial was carved at his company - The Joseph Coduri Granite Company. Are you aware of any official photos of the memorial and any details of when it was dedicated, etc. Thanks.
