Md. voters choose delegates too

Democratic and Republican voters will head to the polls on Tuesday for the presidential primary.

Voters from both parties will be selecting presidential candidates, delegates to the convention and some congressional seats as well.

The Maryland GOP has 24 elected delegates to the Republican National Convention. Dr. Jim Pelura, Chair of the state party tells WBAL Radio that voters will select three delegates from each district. Ten other delegates will be chosen at the state party’s spring convention. Three others including Pelura and the national committee leaders will attend the national convention. There are no super delegates on the Republican side in Maryland.

Democratic voters will be selecting 99 delegates to their national convention. The democrats have super delegates in Maryland. Party chair Michael Cryor tells WBAL Radio those super delegates are unlisted and are made up of elected officials in Maryland and those who have a unique value to the democratic party in the state.

Voters are not obligated to pick a delegate who is attached to the candidate they choose. For example, if you vote for Barack Obama, you don’t have to vote for the delegates attached to Obama, you can chose another candidate’s delegates or uncommitted delegates if you want.

But officials say if a delegate on the ballot has a name behind them for a specific candidate and that candidate is still in the running then that delegate must vote for the candidate at convention.
