Ban on sanctuary cities proposed
Senator Alan Kittleman (R-Howard/Carroll) appeared on WBAL’s Bruce Elliott show to discuss proposed legislation. Senate Bill 421’s synopsis: Requiring local governments to fully comply with and support federal immigration law; prohibiting local governments from restricting their employees from requesting, obtaining, sending, receiving, or maintaining immigration information; requiring local governments to enforce federal immigration law and protect civil rights; etc.
From the WBAL story:
In Annapolis, a Senate committee holds a hearing on legislation to prevent any community from becoming a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants.
Senator Allan Kittleman is sponsoring the bill.
He tells WBAL’s Bruce Elliott Show that he hopes it discourages illegal immigrants from coming to Maryland, by barring counties or local communities from offering illegal immigrants any type of benefits.
Several communities have already considered a sanctuary city ban including Tawneytown in Carroll county.
The Senate Environmental Health and Education Committee holds its hearing on Wednesday.
The hearing is at 1 p.m. on 2/27. House Bill 735 is the House version of this bill.
