Maryland Superdelegates

Nearly half of Maryland’s 27 Democratic superdelegates remain uncommitted to either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, and many of them have been heavily courted for months by the candidates or surrogate supporters.

So far, Clinton has nine Maryland superdelegates who say they are backing her; Obama has five. Overall, Clinton has a small lead in superdelegate endorsements, 258-232, according to the latest tally by the AP.

Superdelegates are party and elected officials who automatically attend the party’s convention and are free to support whomever they choose. There will be nearly 800 of them at the convention in Denver. They have become a focus of the campaign because neither Clinton nor Obama can clinch the nomination without them.
