MD Guard assistance for Gustav leaving today

I knew something was up when I got to the Martin State Airport MARC station this morning (which is directly across the road from the airport as well as Warfield ANG Base) around 5 a.m. and saw 3 separate local television crews setting up for stand-ups on the edge of the road with their backs to the front gate of the base and their trucks parked in the MARC lot.

Maryland Army National Guard officials say dozens of soldiers and airmen will travel to Louisiana to help with recovery efforts after Hurricane Gustav.

They are scheduled to leave Warfield Air Base in Middle River on Tuesday morning on three C-130 transport planes. Governor Martin O’Malley is expected to see them off.

A 50-person Aviation Command and Control Cell will travel to Baton Rouge, La. and an Aviation Tactical Terminal Control System with 11 personnel is bound for Esler Field in Alexandria, La.

Maryland Emergency Management officials say three National Guard helicopters with 17 people were sent to Mississippi on Sunday and Monday. A medical strike team of 25 people and 11 vehicles from Maryland arrived in Alexandria, La., early Sunday morning.
