Maryland State Police are investigating what caused a collision that killed two people early Monday morning.

Police said a van and a passenger vehicle collided on the Inner Loop of Interstate 695 just before the Northpoint Boulevard exit shortly before 7 a.m.

Witnesses told police that the van, driven by Stanley Koppenhaver Jr., 27, of Harford County, crossed over the grassy median into the Inner Loop, struck a guardrail and went airborne, landing on the other car.

Koppenhaver and his passenger, Paul Patterson, 47, of Baltimore, were ejected from the vehicle. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 42-year-old man from Baltimore County, was taken to Bayview Hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police. There is currently no word on his name or condition.
