The Naval Academy says a midshipman being treated for a possible case of bacterial meningitis has died.

An academy spokesman says the 20-year-old freshman died Monday evening at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Tests are still pending to determine the cause of the midshipman’s illness and death. He has not been identified.

The midshipman was stricken ill on Wednesday and taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center Wednesday. Friday night, he was transferred to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

As a precaution, 44 midshipmen, staff and first responders who were in near the midshipman have received antibiotics.
