JHU installs gunfire detectors

Examiner

Johns Hopkins University soon will able to pinpoint the location of gunfire in the Charles Village community and Homewood campus with a new security system, officials said.

The university’s campus security, in collaboration with the Baltimore police, Planning Systems Inc. and iXP Corp., will install the first SECURES system. The 93 sensors will detect gunshot acoustics and within seconds alert the communications center to dispatch city police.

Hopkins will put the sensors on street lights and buildings in the area encompassed by the University Parkway and 25th, Barclay and Charles streets.

The sensors can differentiate between gunshots and other noises, such as firecrackers, Hopkins officials said.

Officials are expected to demonstrate the system Thursday afternoon and begin using it at midnight Thursday.
