Baltimore Theatre project in dire straits

The Baltimore Theatre Project is teetering even more on the brink than usual.

Buffeted by the grim economy, an official at Baltimore’s premier venue for cutting-edge productions is hinting for the first time that the theater might be in danger of shutting its doors in the fall.

“The situation is very serious,” says Anne Fulweiler, producing director of the black-box, 150-seat performing space at 45 W. Preston St.

The Theatre Project’s current season of subscription shows runs through June 14; its 2009-2010 season normally would start in September.

The venue, which hosts national, international and local experimental theater, dance and musical performances, always has lived hand-to-mouth, so even a relatively small drop in revenues has big consequences. The company’s budget for the 2008-2009 season was $240,000.
