Electricity re-regulation unlikely to pass

With less than two weeks to go in the 2009 Maryland General Assembly session, the State Senate today is expected to take a final vote on a bill to re-regulate electricity.

However, Senate President Mike Miller predicts the bill will not head to the governor’s desk this year.

“I think it will be a close vote in the Senate, and the House has already made its feelings known, so in spite of the governor’s prodding, I don’t think the House is going to pass re-regulation this year,” Miller told WBAL News.

Miller said he has “reservations” about the bill, noting that electricity choice has provided the promised savings to businesses, but not to residential customers.

Miller also said the bill which gives the state the power to order power companies to build new power plants.
