Michael Phelps in the military?
We have been hearing unconfirmed reports in recent days that Olympic champion Michael Phelps is looking at joining the military in some capacity. We understand Phelps and his representatives are researching the issues involved to determine the best way for him to serve.
It is not known which branch he might join, but it would probably be a reserve component commitment. The Naval, Coast Guard or Marine Corps Reserve might make the most sense given Phelps’ swimming abilities, but then again he might decide to join the Maryland National Guard (either Air or Army.) The rumors also indicate that Phelps might be angling for a direct commission as an officer, but hasn’t ruled out enlisting and going to basic training or boot camp.
The most notable athletes to recently join the military were the late Pat Tillman, who gave up a career in the NFL to serve in special operations, and boxer Riddick Bowe, who dropped out of boot camp at Parris Island in 1997 after enlisting in the USMC Reserve.
Stay tuned for updates.
