Oriole Bird cartoon returns to Sun

DCRTV

Orioles fans will once again enjoy the Oriole cartoon (left) that became a Baltimore Sun icon in the 1960s and 1970s. The new cartoon will debut Tuesday, 4/7, after opening day and will be featured in the Baltimore Sun sports section and on baltimoresun.com. The cartoon features a caricature of the Orioles mascot reflecting the outcome of the previous day’s game. The customized cartoon will run after every game during the 2009 season. This season’s cartoon will be drawn by cartoonist Mike Ricigliano – “Ricig” to readers. Ricig is a local sports cartoonist whose work appears regularly in the Sun, Buffalo News, Los Angeles Times, and USA Today Sports Weekly. His cartoon commentary has been a regular part of the Sun Sports section (and previously, Evening Sun sports section) since 1985. From 1967 to 1979, the Oriole Bird cartoon appeared on the front page of the newspaper, with the bird’s expression, demeanor, and apparel reflecting whether the baseball team had won, lost, or had a rainout for the previous day’s game. Jim Hartzell, a 45-year Sun artist, created the original bird cartoon, and in fact the first official Orioles team logo as well…..

At Game 6 of the 1971 World Series I seen a giant poster that was handing outside of Memorial Stadium of the Psycho Bird and I thought to myself, “How Cool”. I later found out that this logo was featured the the Baltimore Sun after each Orioles loss. Well after considering 12 consecutive seasons of losing this logo should be seen more often. I would like to put this logo somewhere into my home which happens to be filled with Orioles collectables and photos over many years of collecting. I consider my home to be an Orioles shrine, there are Ravens collectables too, no Irsays are allowed, and are forbidden to enter my doors. Players that have won championships for Baltimore are only admitted to my shrine.I would like a T-shirt with a comment with this logo too, if possible. This search has been going on for many years now and realize that there may be copyright laws as to why such a collectable of this logo is not avalible to the public.I believe this logo would be a big seller to the many die hard Orioles Fans and think this idea should be considered.
