Van Hollen Supports Investments in Critical Infrastructure and Combating Climate Change
Fiscally Responsible Bill Focuses on National Priorities
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on House passage of the FY 2010 Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill:
“Today, I joined my colleagues in making investments in our nation’s infrastructure, natural resources, and cultural life — as well as our commitment to tackling the ongoing challenge of global climate change. The Interior-Environment Appropriations Bill is fiscally responsible, focusing on national priorities and cutting funding for programs that are unnecessary.
“This legislation safeguards our nation’s land, air, and water, provides critical investments for our National Park System, and supports America’s cultural heritage. This bill also affirms our commitment to address the issue of climate change — including $50 million for the EPA’s Energy Star program, $17 million for the development of a Greenhouse Gas Registry necessary for monitoring greenhouse gases, and $10 million for new grants to empower local communities to find innovative ways to cut their greenhouse gas emissions.
“In my own district, this bill provides $750,000 to the City of Rockville for a Sewer Sanitation Rehabilitation Project. This project will improve the City’s sewer system and ultimately help protect the Chesapeake Bay.
“The Interior-Environment Appropriations Bill is a responsible piece of legislation that invests in our national infrastructure and our environment, and I am proud to join my colleagues in supporting it.”
