CARDIN WELCOMES MARYLAND’S PERCIASEPE TO SENATE AS OBAMA NOMINEE FOR DEPUTY ADMINISTRATOR OF EPA

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD), proudly introduced Maryland’s former Secretary of the Environment Bob Perciasepe to the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on Wednesday for his confirmation hearing to be the Deputy Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

“I have known Bob Perciasepe for many years. He has a 30-year history of experience that makes him ideally suited to serve as the second-ranking person at EPA. He knows about the issues facing local government, state government, regional and national policymakers, and the environmental community. His dedicated public service has had a major impact on Maryland and Baltimore, especially the Chesapeake Bay. He coordinated efforts among the Bay watershed states and has already served in two major leadership positions within EPA, as the director of the Office of Water and later as the director of the Air Programs,” said Cardin, chairman of the EPW Water and Wildlife Subcommittee. “He knows about working outside of government, too. For the last 8 years he has worked at one of America’s oldest and most respected natural resource advocacy groups: the National Audubon Society.

“Bob Perciasepe is a person of unquestioned intelligence, exemplary management skills, and vision. I look forward to working with him and Administrator Lisa Jackson as we strengthen the Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts underway and work to provide the federal attention and resources required to renew and maintain this national treasure. President Obama has chosen well. Bob Perciasepe will make an excellent Deputy Administrator.”

From 1990 to 1993, Perciaspe was Secretary of Environment and directed pollution control and environmental protection for the state of Maryland. Previously, he was Baltimore’s Assistant Director of Planning, where he oversaw environmental and infrastructure planning and managed the capital budget for the city.
