Visit two historic ships in Canton this weekend

I saw the Savannah in Charleston, SC in the early ’80s when I was a kid. It was at Patriots Point Maritime Museum then and there was talk of making it a floating hotel there at the time. I will be headed out either today or tomorrow to Pier 13 in Canton.

The SS John W. Brown, one of two remaining Liberty Ships from World War Two is docked in Baltimore this weekend.

It’s part of a 50th anniversary celebration for another vessel, the N.S. Savannah, the world’s first nuclear powered merchant ship.

Both ships are retired from active service and are docked at Pier 13 in the Canton Marine Terminal.

They are open for free public tours.

Tours are set for 10-4 Saturday and 10-3 Sunday.

Saturday’s tours are part of a celebration for the Savannah that includes a boat parade that is scheduled for noon.

The Savanna , launched 50 years ago this month, became America’s “Atoms for Peace ambassador” around the globe.

The John W. Brown was built in Baltimore during the early 1940’s.
