UMBC student allegedly sexually assaulted by faculty/staff

The Retriever Weekly

Police records indicate that UMBC police are investigating an alleged sexual assault of a student by a UMBC faculty or staff member. The weekly crime log reported on the UMBC police website stated that ” a UMBC student was allegedly sexually assaulted by a UMBC faculty/ staff member.” This incident was labeled sex offense 4th degree.
As reported in the TRW news blog on September 23rd, the alleged incident took place on September 9 in the Chemistry building at 5pm but was not reported until September 13. When asked for details on the alleged incident, Chief of Police Antonio Williams stated that he could not release any names in the case. “We want to protect both the alleged victim in the case,” said Chief Williams “as well as protect the right of the accused individual.” According to Chief Williams, names of alleged victims and alleged suspects are not released in the investigation of any case that is sexual in nature. In regards to the case itself, Chief Williams said that “it is still being investigated on two fronts. The Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation but also UMBC is conducting an internal sexual harassment investigation.” Police have spoken to both parties and are continuing the investigation. Chief Williams has said the police are looking to see if any other alleged incidents have occurred, either with the alleged victim in this case or any other alleged victim. He also pointed out that since the investigation is still ongoing, all information regarding any current or previous actions are alleged but they are looking into it. “We take the matter very seriously and are investigating it vigorously.”
Anyone with details about the case or any other case is urged to contact the UMBC campus police department.
