The Naval Academy announced their 2010 football schedule on Thursday, which includes five games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and three neutral site games in NFL venues. The Mids will play four teams who played in a bowl in 2009, including two conference champions. The Mids are coming off a 10-4 campaign, including a seventh-consecutive Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy and a victory over Missouri in the Texas Bowl.

Navy will kick off the 2010 campaign on Sept. 4 against Maryland at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.

Diversity flap over USNA color guard at World Series

It seems the Naval Academy performed some real-life photoshopping. Academy leaders removed two white men from the color guard line-up for a performance at the recent World Series and replaced them with a “non-white” man and a white woman for purposes of diversity.

[...]

But here’s the twist: the “non-white” man forgot part of his uniform and had to be replaced. The line-up was all-white, anyway, and the Naval Academy ended up with bad PR.

Other midshipmen and alumni complained about the apparent diversity shuffle. After the requisite he said/he said exchanges, where an academy spokesman denied that the school pulled the men because they were white, despite a press release apparently contradicting him, brigade commanders issued a gag order forbidding midshipmen to talk about the controversy to outsiders.

A midshipman has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to import and distribute more than 150 pounds of marijuana.

U.S. Naval Academy student Juan D. Alonso was sentenced Tuesday to nine years and 10 months in a military prison.

The Navy also says the 24-year-old pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary and armed robbery and weapons charges.

Officials say Alonso was detained in June by U.S. Customs and Border Protection after trying to smuggle marijuana in a rented car at the San Ysidro port of entry near San Diego.

Navy just misses taking out Buckeyes

usna.gifThe Midshipmen of the Naval Academy had their chance at knotting the game at 29 ripped from their grasp after a 2 point conversion attempt resulted in an interception return for 2 points that gave Ohio State a 31-27 victory in Columbus yesterday. Navy’s subsequent onside kick attempt went out of bounds.

The scoring started for the Buckeyes in the 1st Quarter with a 38-yard pass from Terrelle Pryor to Dane Sanzenbacher that put OSU up 7-0 after the extra point. Navy QB Ricky Dobbs scampered in from 17 yards for a touchdown that tied it at 7 after the PAT. OSU led again (10-7) after a 25-yard field goal from Aaron Pettrey with 1:30 left in the 1st Quarter.

2nd Quarter scoring included a 2 yard run by Pryor and a 25 yard field goal by Pettrey to give Ohio State a 20-7 at the half. Navy scored late in the 3rd Quarter with a 16 yard pass from Dobbs to Marcus Curry. The 4th Quarter began with the Midshipmen trailing 20-14.

Ohio State extended the lead to 29-14 following a 52 yard Pettrey field goal and a 6 yard run by Dan Herron (with a failed PAT.) Dobbs put Navy on the board again with a 85 yard pass to Curry which made the score 29-21 after a Joe Buckley kick. Dobbs closed the gap on a 24 yard run with 2:23 left in the game. Trailing 29-27, the Mids went for the two-point conversion to tie things up before the aforementioned interception return put OSU up 31-27.

Coast Guard rescues midshipmen in Chesapeake Bay

BALTIMORE – The Coast Guard medevaced a midshipman after responding to a call from a Navy training vessel in the Chesapeake Bay Friday.

A crewmember on a 44-foot Navy sailboat contacted Coast Guard Sector Baltimore watchstanders at 3:37 p.m., via marine-band radio reporting an injured 22-year-old Navy midshipman that reportedly struck his head against the boom during training in the Chesapeake Bay.

A crew on a 41-foot utility boat from Coast Guard Station Annapolis, Md. arrived on scene at 4:16 p.m. The crew then transferred the man to the rescue boat and transported him to Annapolis City Dock where he was met by local EMS and then taken to a shock trauma center in Baltimore.

“The U.S. Naval Academy very much appreciates the timely assistance of our U.S. Coast Guard colleagues this afternoon,” said Cmdr. Joe Carpenter, a U.S. Naval Academy spokesman. “The professionalism of these fellow mariners was displayed today as they helped transfer one of our injured shipmates so that he could receive medical treatment.  The Navy and Coast Guard have operated together throughout our nation’s history and this was another example of the strong bond and respect our services have for one another.”
