Fact-checking The Baltimore Sun and WBAL-TV on Terps’ new hire

See below for a correction/update.

An unnamed reporter for the Baltimore Sun reports:

Clemson assistant coach Andre Powell is joining the Terps football team as running backs coach, Maryland announced in a news release Monday.

Powell has been at Clemson for the past four years, where he also coached special teams during part of his tenure.

Gerry Sandusky also reported on the 11 p.m. news Monday that Maryland hired Powell away from Clemson.

The truth is that Powell was fired by Clemson on January 2nd, 2011, after the Tigers’ loss to South Florida in their bowl game.

UPDATE: Since this post was originally written, the unnamed Sun reporter quietly changed his post to read:

He was let go Jan. 2, a few days after Clemson lost the Meineke Car Care Bowl 31-26 to South Florida.

The Sun reporter did not post an update or correction. He changed his copy without even acknowledging he had been wrong. This is poor form for a journalist with a newspaper. Print stories require a higher standard than this and almost every conscientious blogger would do what Barker didn’t do.

UPDATE: The references to Jeff Barker of the Sun in the original post were changed. Barker was not working when the post was written. The blog itself is Barker’s but the byline for that individual post was a generic one that I missed initially. I apologize for the error and we regret any incovenience.
