Format changes coming for WBAL Radio?

Sources familiar with the radio station tell us that WBAL-AM is considering some changes in the wake of Ron Smith’s expected death. Changes might include the extension of Maryland Morning News to 10 a.m. (currently it’s on 5-9 a.m.) and C4 starting his show at 10 a.m. and ending it at 2 p.m. (His show is currently noon-3 p.m.) Maryland’s News Now (currently 3-6 p.m.) would start at 2 under the possible changes under consideration. There are other possible changes being discussed as well, according to sources. These changes would reportedly take place at the beginning of the new year.

That’s not a format change. That’s a schedule change. Basically, it means not trying to have someone step in as Ron’s successor.

This isn't really a "format" change. This is more of a programmatic shift (which was bound to happen, considering that WBAL had 25% of it's weekday programming emphasizing the iconic Mr. Smith).

A format change would be to move away from "News talk" to "All News" (a la WTOP in DC) or "Sports Talk" (a la WTEM) or to music.

Yes. I thought the word "retirement" was more appropriate.
