Zero Tolerance: Lax players suspended for bringing penknife and lighter to school for stick repair

WBAL.com

A lacrosse player at Easton High School in Maryland is crying foul after he was arrested for having a pen knife in his bag, a tool he says is for repairing his lacrosse stick.

Graham Dennis was charged as a juvenile with possession of a deadly weapon and was suspended for 10 days after officials found the knife during a search of bags on a school bus headed for a game.

Dennis’ teammate, Casey Edsall, who had a lighter in his bag he also says is used to repair equipment, was suspended for a day.

School officials would not comment on the details of the case, but Talbot County supervisor of student services Lynne Duncan says the school system has to follow Maryland law, which bans weapons from school property.

While this isn’t quite as bad as the butterknife suspensions, it’s still pretty bad. I remember taking a pocket knife to school when I was a kid and nothing was ever said.

Like most such press reports, the victims of abusive school officials are identified by name, but not the school officials responsible.
