Baltimore cabbie sentenced to 15 years in terror case

A cabbie from Gwynn Oak who pleaded guilty in April to aiding a terrorist organization (Lashkar-e-Taiba from Pakistan) was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison today. Mahmud Faruq Brent Al Mutazzim went to Pakistan in 2002 to a terrorist training camp run by the group. Mutazzim could have received 30 years under sentencing guidelines had he not agreed to the plea on the charges that he pleaded guilty to. He was arrested in 2005 in a case that also saw arrests of other individuals in other states.

Nicole Richie in Annapolis update

We previously blogged about a Nicole Richie sighting in Annapolis at the California Pizza Kitchen in the Annapolis Mall.

People.com (via Richie Fan) also reported that Richie and her boyfriend Joel Madden were in downtown Annapolis last weekend. Over a couple of days, they were seen at 49 West, City Dock Coffee, and McGarvey’s Saloon & Oyster Bar. Someone I know in the area mentioned the McGarvey’s rumor to me earlier this week as well.

For more on visiting Annapolis, read a travel review I wrote earlier this summer.

UPDATE
Laura Vozzella of the Sun reports the following:

I have it on good CPK authority that she picked up takeout and didn’t eat anything at the restaurant. Her order: spinach-artichoke dip and Thai chicken pizza.

Historical Markers

From time to time, we like to highlight photography from the area and this time it’s thematic.

There are hundreds of roadside historical markers across the state of Maryland. The professional wrestling one pictured at left is near the warehouse parking lots at Camden Yards. As you may be able to tell, the MARC station is close by. You can add your own photos of Maryland historical markers to this Flickr group. If they’re in the Baltimore area (not limited to historical markers) you can also consider adding them to the Inside Charm City group.

Jacko still house-hunting in the region

DCist links to a WaPo story that Michael Jackson was in DC touring the Smithsonian yesterday. His spokeswoman says he’s in town for a few more days looking for a vacation home. Is the Eastern Shore still on the radar screen?

The rest of our coverage of Michael Jackson looking for a house on Maryland’s Eastern Shore is here.

Police commish Hamm resigns

The Examiner reports that embattled Baltimore City Police Commissioner Leonard Hamm has resigned from that post. At least one mayoral candidate (Keiffer Mitchell) in the September primary has called for Hamm to resign as the homicide rate steadily climbs. The story mentions that interim mayor Sheila Dixon is going to announce the resignation in a news conference tomorrow. Deputy Commissioner Frederick Bealefield will serve as acting commissioner.

The Sun received no comment from either Dixon’s office or the Police Department.
