I-95 Jammed

A wreck near Eastern Avenue on I-95 closed it in both directions after initially closing everything but one lane northbound. A tractor trailer turned over onto a light pole after hitting a SUV and the driver was trapped in the cab. There was a report of a hazmat leak (of diesel fuel) and the driver had to be medevacked to Shock Trauma.  Occupants of the SUV were taken to Bayview. An earlier wreck farther north on 95 near Elkton also gummed up things farther north. The initial state traffic alert for the tractor trailer wreck is here.

Radio reports indicate that people on northbound 95 were taking Moravia Road as an alternate route while southbound traffic was taking Pulaski Highway or Philadelphia Road as well as 895. 95 and 895 both are ugly still.

Reflected skyline

There is now a Flickr group affiliated with this blog. The name of the group is Inside Charm City as well and the link is here.

There is a maxium of 150 pictures a month by one person. That limit can be adjusted in either direction or by changing the time period.

Please try to add the tag “Inside Charm City” or insidecharmcity to photos you add to the pool. Also, we will be featuring our readers’ photos on the site as a part of picking the best one of the day/week/month and as a part of blog posts. Please only add photos that you’ve licensed for re-use in Flickr.

We’re looking forward to all the great photos of Baltimore that should be added to the group.

Os announcer says Schilling’s bloody sock was a fake

Oriole Magic (via Blogtimore) has the best rundown of what happened during the 5th inning of last night’s Orioles’ loss to the Bosox. During the game, MASN announcer Gary Thorne said that Red Sox player Doug Mirabelli had admitted that the now- famous bloody red sock of Curt Schilling’s from the 2004 ALCS was painted red and not actually Schilling’s blood.

The controversy that has now been stirred up was reported on by the Baltimore Sun. The Sun story reports that when asked about it after the game, Mirabelli told the Boston Globe that it was “a straight lie.” The Globe story points out that Mirabelli actually said, “What? Are you kidding me? He’s [expletive] lying. A straight lie.”

Thorne’s broadcast partner Jim Palmer stood by him and said that Thorne didn’t get such a great track record by making things up while also saying it didn’t detract from what Schilling did in 2004. MASN did not air the 5th inning during a later re-broadcast of the game, citing “time constraints.”

Oriole Magic hypothesizes that there are 3 possibilities: the sock was fake, Mirabelli was cracking a joke that he later backed off on, or Thorne simply lost it. According to Oriole Magic, the first two options are the only ones most people are seriously considering.

Fatal stabbing in Baltimore City

According to Baltimore Crime and the WBAL, Baltimore city police responded to a stabbing late this morning (between 11 and 12) at McDonald’s at 21 S. Calvert. One man was killed after a confrontation between two customers. WBAL reports via the AP that a suspect is in custody.

The Sun reports that 3 men came into the restaurant near the Inner Harbor arguing and that when one of them was stabbed, the other two men fled the scene. An off-duty-policer officer who was a customer in the restaurant, along with another customer, chased the two men down. Two people, presumably these other two men, are reportedly being questioned by police.
