The Prince George’s County Department of Social Services approved a pimp to be the guardian of a 12-year-old girl three months after he started selling her for sex on the streets of Washington, court documents show.

Shelby Lewis has pleaded guilty to taking four girls from his Temple Hills home to D.C., where he made them to sell their bodies and then turn the cash over to him. Lewis has been jailed pending his March sentencing in D.C.’s federal court. The 42-year-old faces 15 to 20 years in prison.

Prince George’s County officials are scrapping a plan to install fixed speed cameras at dozens of locations in the county, and will instead use mobile cameras.

County Executive Jack Johnson told the Washington Post that the county will use a few mobile cameras, rather than the 50 fixed locations.

Johnson criticized the fixed camera plan in an interview with the newspaper.

“It seems to me like it’s more a revenue-raising issue than public safety, and it’s going to take too many dollars out of the hands of our citizens,” Johnson said of the fixed-camera plan. “Many of them are overstretched. It doesn’t mean that I’m not going to go forward. What it means is that I’m going to tailor a program to focus particularly on public safety.”

Prince George’s County will layoff up to 125 employees in an effort to close the county’s $22.7 million gap caused by state budget cuts, County Executive Jack Johnson said Monday.

The cuts, effective Nov. 1, will affect 85 employees paid from Maryland’s general fund and up to 40 county health department employees.

The health department layoffs are a result of the direct $2.7 million cut to the department.

Though the county has implemented furloughs and hiring freezes during the economic downturn, this is the first time it has laid off employees.

Prince Georges County Police say that Delonte West, a starting guard for the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, was arrested at 10PM, September 17, 2009, for possession of two handguns and a shotgun.

Prince Georges Police say West was stopped for unsafe lane changing while riding his Can Am Spyder motorcycle, northbound on I-495 at Central Avenue.

Police say that officers found that West had two handguns and a shotgun in his possession and arrested him. West, police add, was very cooperative.

A Prince Georges County Police official says that West was released on personal recognizance. Court records indicate that he is scheduled to appear in court on November 20, 2009.

Delonte West is a graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland, where he led the Raiders to their first tournament appearance. West played for the Boston Celtics, the Seattle Supersonics and was traded to the Cavaliers in February 2008.
